Fuck. The alcohol consumed last night was the least of my worries. Maybe I should’ve drank more so I could’ve slept through this morning and have “puking my guts out” be an honest and valid excuse to skip the rest of the day. It’d be easier than sitting in the bridal suite with everyone laughing around me, enjoying getting dressed for the wedding. My hair is done, my makeup done, my dress on, but I’m not ready to face what’s outside those doors. I knew my dad would move on eventually, but I never expected it to be before Mom even passed. And I get it, he lost his wife. But if he really cared about her, would he really have been sleeping with another woman in their house?

Pushing the thoughts out my mind, I fill my flute with a mimosa and take a large gulp as Taylor drops onto the bench beside me. “Is your head pounding? Because mine is.” She groans, her fingers pressed to her temple.

“Yep. But this is helping.” I hold up my glass and she holds a hand up.

“No, I can’t even think about drinking more.” I worry she’s gonna puke but she doesn’t. And oddly enough, we sit there next to each other in peace. It’s sad. I’d rather sit with the woman my ex cheated on me with than my dad and his mistress. And I don’t care if they get married or what they do. She’ll always be the other woman.

A few hours later, when everyone is dressed and assembled, it’s time for the ceremony to begin. We make our way out to the beach, stepping into the warm sand as the air whips around us. My effort at keeping my dress down is my main focus. Thankfully, I’d opted to wear some boy shorts under it, but I really don’t want to flash the crowd.

The ceremony begins and the howling wind seems to calm a bit. I keep my eyes focused on Andrew and Jennifer, avoiding looking in the front row at all costs. I can’t handle it. My mom should be seated there, not her.

The ceremony goes off without a hitch before the bridal party moves to a private patio just off the sand on the backside of the hotel. The place really does look wonderful with soft fabrics and classy decor setting the atmosphere perfectly. I’m actively focusing on the aesthetics of the reception area instead of everything else because my head feels like a jumbled web otherwise.

“Have I told you how gorgeous you look?” Dax says, passing me a refilled tea.

“A few times.” I say with a smile, though he’s said it way more than a few times. Surprisingly, each time it made me feel a little bit better. But that’s confusing in and of itself because he’s part of that web in my head.

I’m extremely embarrassed about the scene he witnessed this morning—not exactly the perfect introduction to my dad, but it sums up our relationship pretty well.
